UK decides to #BanTheBead

At Pai, we’ve never used plastic microbeads in our products.

And, with easily available biodegradable alternatives like Jojoba Wax Beads, we don’t think there’s any excuse to do so.

These tiny beads have a devastating effect on marine wildlife, where they’re unable to be biodegraded and mistaken for food by sea life.

Last year we joined forces with other brands in the beauty world calling on the Government to ban the use of plastic microbeads.

So we’re over the moon to hear the UK is set to introduce a ban on microbeads that has been called the ‘strongest in the world’ by campaigners.

Following a public consultation, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said the ban would come in to force in 2018 and apply to microplastics in all ‘rinse-off’ cosmetics and toiletries like toothpaste.

Microplastics in makeup and sun protection will still be permitted for the time being, but ministers have asked a committee to examine which other products should be covered by the ban.

We hope this is a step towards more responsible practices in the beauty industry…and much tougher regulation on ingredients that are not only harmful to us but the wider environment.
