The advent of a New Year is always a great time to make some skin resolutions for the months ahead, particularly if, like me, you’ve been over-indulging during the festive season!
Drinking alcohol and eating foods rich in refined sugar and low grade animal fats can lead to breakouts and a dull, congested complexion.
Feeling in need of a skin detox? Here are my top tips for keeping your skin happy and healthy in 2012. I’ve kept them simple and manageable and spared you the usual ‘drink more water’ and ‘get more beauty sleep’ pointers. We all know that already!
1. Strike a balance.
Balanced skin is clear skin. Maintain your skin’s pH by using a gentle cleansing system that maintains its acid mantle.
Always buy detergent-free products as detergents* strip away your natural oils and alkaline the skin – leading to a sensation of tightness. *Look out for: ‘sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate’, ‘cocamidopropyl betaine’
2. Get ingredient acquainted.
I promise you this will change your life! You don’t need to have a chemistry degree to get clued up on cosmetic ingredients. Research those you’re not familiar with so you can make informed buying decisions.
Look out for Soil Association, ECOCERT or USDA organic logos on the outer packaging and don’t be duped by phoney kitemarks.
3. Keep calm and carry on.
Don’t underestimate the negative effect of stress on the skin. Psoriasis and eczema are conditions particularly badly affected by our emotions and raised anxiety levels. Stress suppresses the immune system leaving the body less equipped to cope with environmental triggers.
Regular acupressure facials are a great way to unwind. Acupressure techniques dispel the intense energy of stress and stimulates the release of endorphins, easing existing flares and preventing them from recurring in the near future
Welcome to your New Year and new skin start. Wishing you all a radiant 2012!
