All About Our Kukui & Jojoba Bead Exfoliator

We hear so many questions as well as plenty of misinformation when it comes to exfoliators. In particular we get asked why some exfoliators might be too harsh for reactive or sensitive skin, as well as the conversation surrounding their impact on the planet.

We talk regularly on the blog and over on our social channels about the merits – and indeed necessity – of exfoliating sensitive skin. But we thought a refresher on the environmental impact of these wonder products might be helpful too.

First up, what are microbeads?

Within the skincare industry, these tiny plastic beads had previously been used in scrubs and exfoliators to help remove the skin’s dead surface cells. The microplastics were then flushed down the sink and into our water systems – a direct source of oceanic pollution.

Since the get go, we’ve been vehemently against the use of microbeads in both personal care and domestic cleaning products. So much so that we – along with three other British beauty brands – wrote to the UK Prime Minister to call for their outright ban back in 2016. The letter coincided with the submission of a #BanTheBead petition with over 300,000 signatures on June 8th, World Oceans Day. Something we’re proud to say has since been put into legislation.

What’s the alternative to microbeads?

At Pai – we want to make it easy for our customers to make good choices, by creating products they know will be kind to their skin, as well as the planet. That’s why we make our exfoliator using the gentlest, most effective alternative to plastic microbeads – 100% natural and biodegradable Jojoba Beads. They get to work removing that dull-making dead skin without irritating the healthy cells underneath. And because they’re perfectly spherical, they roll over the skin rather than tearing or cutting it. This is often the case with irregularly shaped and sharp-edged sugar and rice scrubs.

Tried our Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator?

Regular exfoliation helps skin feel great for two reasons. Firstly, sloughing away the dead skins on top decongests buildup and helps combat dullness. Even more importantly perhaps, is that by removing the surface cells, all of your carefully chosen skincare and makeup can then get to work much more effectively. Rather than sitting on top of dead skin, revealing those healthy cells below means that all of your products can be fully absorbed and utilised. Our exfoliator is made with nourishing Kukui Oil too – packed with Omegas 3 & 6 to nourish the skin and protect its delicate moisture barrier. Which means even more hydration and radiance for you!
