New York at Christmas. What could be more magical? Wonderful window displays, world famous Christmas trees, illuminated markets. For destinations to get you in the festive mood, this has to top the lot.
So, if you’re lucky enough to be spending the holidays in NYC, here’s our whittled down list (it was tough!) of the top five things to put on your to-do list.
Marvelling at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
No Christmas trip to the Big Apple would be complete without taking in the splendour of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Thousands of New Yorkers and tourists alike flock to see the city’s famous festive landmark.
This year’s spectacular tree is bigger and brighter than ever. Standing at 75 feet and weighing around 13 tons, the Norwegian Spruce is festooned with over 45,000 LED lights. Take in a warming hot chocolate or winter cocktail as you take in its beauty, or ice-skate in its shadow.
Watching The Nutcracker
For something enchanting to warm your spirit, head to the Lincoln Center for the New York City Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker.
This is the company’s 63rd performance of the Christmas classic. Featuring almost 90 dancers, 62 musicians, 32 stagehands, two casts of 50 students and a glowing one-ton Christmas tree that seemingly grows forever, it’s an experience that’s sure stay with you.
Ogling the holiday window displays
The city’s shimmering department store window displays are a sight to behold. This tradition dates back to the 1870s when Macy’s first started the trend. Now there are so many, you’ll be truly spoilt for choice.
Pull on your comfy shoes and have a wander. Or join a walking tour and be guided along some of the city’s most popular stores.
From Bloomingdales to Barneys, Sax Fifth Avenue to Macy’s, you’ll get to discover the stories behind the displays, stop off at some of the city’s must-see attractions and of course, get some shopping done too.
Skating at The Bryant Park Winter Village
Make magical winter memories at the Bryant Park Winter Village, a winter wonderland in midtown Manhattan.
Lace up your skates and take to the 17,000 square foot ice rink. It’s the only rink in the city where you can skate for free. Or experience a calmer side to shopping in NYC and meander around the unique pop-up shops, not forgetting to sample the tasty festive treats on offer.
Feasting at Rolfs
When in New York, eat like a New Yorker. And during the holidays that means joining in the local tradition of dinner at Rolf’s.
This German restaurant is famous for its over the top decorations, estimated to be made up of over 15,000 ornaments and 100,000 lights!
Tuck into schnitzel, or a seasonal feast of roast goose with red cabbage and mashed potatoes. A traditional glühwein is the perfect accompaniment.
