Dealing with Eczema in Winter

Winter can wreak havoc on Eczema-prone skin.

Central heating, cold weather and itchy jumpers can be a recipe for uncomfortable flare-ups.

Follow our top tips to help keep Eczema-prone skin calm and soothed in the cooler months.

Avoid the temptation to soak

When dealing with Eczema-prone skin, some find it hard to resist the soothing feeling of hot water (perhaps thanks to a histamine release that eases itching) – but this is always short-lived.

In the long term, too much hot water and foaming bath time products further strip away the skin’s natural oils and leave it more prone to itchiness, dryness and irritation.

Try to limit baths and showers to once a day and keep the temperature warm, not hot.

Double up on moisture

You might find Eczema-prone skin needs even more hydration during winter, when humidity levels drop.

We recommend applying Comfrey & Calendula Calming Body Cream to slightly damp skin directly after washing and once again around twelve hours later to help keep skin nourished and calm.

Go natural

There are few feelings more irritating than a new winter jumper that looks great but feels scratchy against the skin – even more so if you’re dealing with Eczema!

Stick to 100% natural fibres whenever you can. Opt for pure cotton for pyjamas and bedding and, on chillier days, try separating jumpers from skin with a cotton or silk blend thermal top.

Condition and protect

Give problem patches of Eczema extra attention with a few drops of Omega-rich Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil.

Massage into troublesome areas before applying your body cream.

Turn down the thermostat

Take ownership of the thermostat and keep central heating at moderate temperatures.

If the heating is used frequently, try adding an air humidifier to prevent the atmosphere becoming too dry.

A bowl of water placed on a radiator will do the trick…and also helps to control static winter hair!

Give your skin a boost from the inside

Upping your intake of Omegas is one of our top tips for healthy skin year-round, but particularly pertinent in winter.

Omega 3 helps to strengthen the skin’s natural protective (hydrolipidic) barrier and prevent as much moisture loss as possible.
