What do spots on my chin mean?

There’s few things more annoying than a stubborn spot and, if blemishes are persistently popping up in the same area of your face, it can be even more frustrating.

While irritating products can contribute to skin flare ups, we’ve seen more than our fair share of cases that support the belief that our faces are a window to how our insides are functioning.

Due to the popularity of our earlier post on why we get spots in certain areas of the face, we’re taking a closer look at your most commonly asked about ‘problem zones’ – starting with the chin and jawline.

Hormones!

According to Chinese medicine (and what we frequently see – and experience ourselves – here at Pai), blemishes cropping up along the chin and jawline are often linked to hormonal issues.

You may notice they’re often appearing at the same time of the month or have cropped up after starting new contraception or medication.

Blemishes on the chin or jawline can also coincide with illness or pregnancy. If you’ve recently stopped hormonal birth control, you may find these tips on caring for skin after coming off the pill useful.

It’s notoriously difficult to treat hormonal acne with topical products alone, so it’s particularly important to adopt a more holistic approach to restore any imbalances.

If you’re aware of a hormonal issue, or hormonal spots aren’t improving with small lifestyle changes, it’s always a good idea to chat to your doctor or naturopath. You can read more about hormonal acne here.

Getting enough shut eye?

It’s a tip we always include, but getting enough shut eye is essential to keeping hormones balanced.

Aim for a good 7.5-8 hours sleep a night in a cool, completely dark bedroom. For more tips on getting good quality rest, read our top tips on getting a good night’s sleep.

What’s on your plate?

The chin is also thought to be linked to the small intestine, and some people experience hive-like bumps and itching along the jawline and neck as a result of food allergies or intolerances.

It’s not always easy, but quitting or scaling back on any ingredients you might have identified as triggers can help.

Keep it clean

Whether you’re experiencing localised acne or hive-like bumps, keeping the skin calm with irritant-free skincare will go a long way to help too.

If your skin is on the temperamental side, don’t be tempted to reach for traditional acne treatments, such as Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid, which can further irritate and inflame the skin.

Our bestselling Copaiba & Zinc Perfect Balance Blemish Serum has all the efficacy of a traditional anti-acne product – minus the irritation!

Cleanse with a gentle, alcohol-free cleanser and gently exfoliate 1-2 times a week to prevent congestion.
