Why even sensitive skin needs Exfoliation

Everyone loves the feeling of smooth, polished skin.

But if you’ve ever used an exfoliator containing fruit stone powders or ground rice, you’ll know that feeling can quickly be followed by redness, irritation and even breakouts.

The jagged edges of gritty scrubs can cause micro-tears in the skin’s surface and strip away protective lipids.

A delicate balance

However skipping exfoliation altogether can leave skin dull and congested.

It can also make your favourite Moisturiser or Facial Oil feel less effective, as much of the product absorbs into the dead surface skin cells – leading to tightness, dry patches and a less-than-ideal surface for makeup!

Gentle, regular exfoliation supports skin cell turn over to lift away these dead surface cells and reveal the fresh, healthy skin beneath.

How to exfoliate sensitive skin

Our Organic Muslin Cloth, or the textured side of our Dual-Effect Sensitive Skin Cloth, used alongside your Cleanser will offer gentle daily buffing.

For an extra boost, try our Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator.

Ideal for skin that’s usually too sensitive for exfoliation, the perfectly spherical natural Jojoba wax beads gently roll across the skin to polish away dead skin cells and impurities – without scratching the healthy cells below.

Rich in Kukui Oil, it also conditions and protects the moisture barrier of sensitive skin while it exfoliates.

Chemical exfoliants like AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHA (beta hydroxy acids) offer another grit-free alternative, but they’re often formulated with high levels of drying alcohols and can be far too harsh on delicate skin.

We use ultra gentle, naturally-derived AHAs from Pink Pomelo (and absolutely no drying alcohol) in our Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask to gently loosen dull skin cells and smooth the skin.

Gently does it

Most skin types will benefit from gentle exfoliation once or twice a week.

If your skin is very sensitive or prone to inflammation (such as those with Eczema or Rosacea), we recommend limiting it to once a week or week and a half.
